Dress Code

While students are all afforded the right to appropriate expression, they also have a right to an education. Although dress is a matter of self-expression and is influenced by weather and fashion trends, certain items and styles are not acceptable for fostering a positive learning environment.

Blue Heron Dress Code

Blue Heron appreciates your cooperation in maintaining this dress code so that the school can maintain a focused and respectful educational environment. The following items are inappropriate and are not to be brought or worn to school:

  • Clothing that is overly revealing.
    • The midriff, back, chest or buttocks should not be exposed.
    • The bottom of shirts/tops must meet or be longer than the top of the pants/bottoms so the midriff is not exposed.
    • All shirts/tops should have straps; no strapless tops.
  • No undergarments may be visible when in a normal posture (sitting or standing).
  • No pajamas unless it is a specified special day organized by the school.
  • Hats are not allowed to be worn in the building, during school hours, unless it is a specified day organized by the school.
  • Clothing with offensive or illegal slogans or designs on them.
    • Anything that promotes drugs, alcohol, violence or is sexually suggestive is not allowed.
  • Shoes with a hard sole must be worn at all times.
    • All students must be in gym shoes on PE days.

This list is not meant to be exhaustive. Any teacher or administrator will determine the appropriate dress.

Dress Code Guidance in Jeffco

Responsibility for student dress and appearance generally rests with individual students and their families. Students may wish to express themselves by the manner of their dress and appearance; however, students shall not wear clothing or affect an appearance at school or school-sanctioned activities or events that is disruptive to the educational environment. Jeffco Public Schools standards on student attire are intended to help students focus on schoolwork, reduce discipline problems, and improve school order and safety.

Disciplinary action for violating the student dress code shall include notifying the student of the violation and requiring that the dress or appearance be corrected before the student reenters the classroom, school environment, or school-sanctioned activity or event. At the discretion of the building-level administrator, a family conference may be held. More serious consequences may result from repeated or serious violations.
